ChalkZone is an American animated television series that aired on Nickelodeon. It was created by Bill Burnett and Larry Huber, and produced by Frederator Studios for the Nickelodeon TV channel (executive producers: Bill Burnett, Larry Huber, Fred Seibert). It is distributed outside the United States by Canadian animation company, Nelvana Limited.
Premise
When an elementary school student named Rudy Tabootie (E.G. Daily) finds a magical piece of chalk that allows him access to the ChalkZone, an alternate dimension where everything and everyone that's ever been drawn in chalk and erased takes form and becomes living and/or tangible. The show focuses on the adventures of Rudy, his sidekick Snap (Candi Milo), and his classmate Penny Sanchez (Hynden Walch).
Production and History
ChalkZone was originally featured as a part Fred Seibert's Oh Yeah! Cartoons animated shorts showcase on Nickelodeon's Oh Yeah! Cartoons in 1998. The series was announced in 1999, but was delayed.
ChalkZone premiered on March 2, 2002, the highest rated new show premire in Nickelodeon's history up to that point. The show went on hiatus in 2005, midway through the fourth season. The show resumed on June 13, airing on Nick until the final episode aired on August 23, 2008. Reruns of the show aired on Nicktoons from May 1, 2002 to October 28, 2013.
Home Release and Merchandise
ChalkZone's first ever media release was with the CD "ChalkZone: In The Zone" releasing on February 4, 2003 containing a total of 10 songs. All of which are from the show's First Season.
Then on March 4, 2003, "Nickstravaganza!" releases on VHS making it ChalkZone's first ever Home Media Release which contains the episode "Future Zone".
Go forward a few months to September 2, 2003, and "Nickstravaganza! 2" releases on both DVD & VHS containing the episodes from Season 1 "French Fry Falls / Gift Adrift / Escucha Mi Corazon". The VHS release only contains "French Fry Falls" while the DVD contains the entire 22 Minute segment.
on April 12, 2003, Wendy's had a toy promotion for ChalkZone that had a total of Five toys which consisted of a Basketball like Game, A mini Chalk Board, a Chalk Reveler, a Snap Action Figure with a Surfboard, and a Chalk Board Flipper. This Promotion lasted until May 23, 2003. To go alongside the promotion, a new ChalkZone Nick.com game called "Double Trouble" released and on ChalkZone themed Wendy's Kids Meal bags, there are two codes you can enter on the game. Those two codes are "Draw" and "Portal".
Then on September 26, 2006, ChalkZone was surprisingly featured on the Nick Picks compilation DVD, Nick Picks Holliday, which featured the episode When Santas Collide.
Then again in 2008, ChalkZone was included on yet another Nickelodeon compilation DVD titled "Nickelodeon Green 2 Go" which contained the episode Waste Mountain. The DVD was packaged in for a limited time with the DVD release of "SpongeBob's Pest of The West".
On October 13, 2014, Amazon released ChalkZone: The Complete Series as an exclusive to their service as a Burn-On-Demand DVD. Technically, the series is not considered to be complete, as it is missing the episode The Smooch due to licensing issues with the song by the Baha Men called "Coconut". Due to these licensing issues, this episode is not available to be purchased on any Video On Demand service.
